TURN IN THE WAR

Sharpsburg, Md, Sept. 17.At a battle near here on the Antietam River, the Southern army that's been invadin Maryland got licked real bad.
Th'invasion started on the 3rd, an Frederick got raided on the 6th. The Confederates came in singin "Maryland My Maryland" an expected the Marylandersbein's Maryland's a slavestatewould join the Confederacy, an twould be a cinch to surround Washington from Maryland. But twarnt so easy with the peopla Maryland agin em, an it just couldent be did. With all the cattle drove up over the Mason-Dixon line into Pennsylvania, an nobody grindin the grain, the Confederate army just hadda bring up supplies from over the Potomac right along, an they kept runnin short. When they started outa Fredrerick City, a Northern spy found a copyath Confederate campaign plans, thrown away in the street disguised as a cigar wrapper an lookin like somebody threw away an old cigar-butt; so the Northern army could chase the Southerners to the right place. Reports by prisoners is that a Confederate spy found out that the Northern spy found out, so th'other side was ready too. But now the Confederates hadda get back to Virginia.
Cincinnati, Ohio, Sept. 20.The Confederate push through Kentucky just got stopped at Covington after a special call to everyone in Cincinnati an other places on the north shorath Ohio River to help out in home defense. Th'Indiana bunch managed takeep the rebels from reachin Louisville.

EMANCIPATION WARNIN

Washington, D.C., Sept. 23.President Lincoln gave out a proclamation yesterday givin warnin to the South to come back intath U.S. within 100 days, an if they didnt by then, he'd order all slaves freed wherever thwas still rebellion by January 1.
He's takin till New Year to decide just where th'emancipation's gonna be, but he's said enough tashow he wont emencipate anywhere the United States has got any real possession. It only applies where they cant put it in effect.
The President aint never been workin to abolish slavery, an he's stopped it several times where generals tired the same thing on the war front. Fremont got demoted that way.
But since Confederate conscription passed their congress on April 16, they been draftin an confiscatin slaves down South to do all kindsa work for their army. An General Butler, who's been in charga New Orleans since its capture on May 1, treated slaves there as contrabanda warproperty used for war purposesan took away all he found in that burg. Comic papers up North been puttin in comic-strip nigger characters sayin "Bress de Lor, we am contraban." An so finally Lincoln's agreein, just to reinforce the victory in Maryland. He's been mainly hopin he'll get soma them slaves to enlist in the Northern army.

ELECTIONS

Election campaigns are startin in now in different States, an reports from New York an Pennsylvania indicate sentiment's heavy agin th'administration. After Lincoln's proclamation, seems like New York City's set to try an break away again from the U.S., like they tried in 1861, when thwas a move to start an independent "Empire City," includin New York an Brooklyn. But theyre still waitin till after electionmaybe till after they see what the President'll do on New Years.

Lincoln's proclamation's a fraud so far's it dont really free no slaves. Can the President do anythin like that? He's got away with plenty that aint in the Constitution, an he's taken too much power alreadyan got away with it. An the proclamation's turned both sides agin him. Th'election this fall's likely to go agin him, even though campaigners agin th'administration's likely to get arrested for talkin outa turn.
But let's hope the proclamation gets sompin more started.
